Recently, at Perry’s Steakhouse and Grill, I was lucky enough to sample their new signature cocktail: The Strait Paloma. This refreshing drink was named for country music legend George Strait in collaboration with the launch of his new tequila, Código 1530. There are five varieties of Código 1530—the Strait Paloma is made with the Blanco. The name Código, honors “Los Códigos,” the time-honored codes and Mexican family traditions used for generations to create this one-of-a-kind sipping tequila.
Dinner was unforgettable. Not only did we taste Strait’s new drink, but two seats away, Strait and his wife Norma were in attendance, spotlighting this new incarnation of an iconic Mexican spirit. He spoke briefly of his love for this drink and his desire to share it with others. Next, cofounder Federico Vaughan guided our group through a flight of the five varieties of Códigos 1530. Until recently, the tequila was only privately available in Mexico, but you can now find the Blanco ($49), Reposado ($69), Añejo ($119) and “Origen,” an Extra Añejo ($250), as well as the newly released Rosa ($65), in Texas.
My favorite is Rosa served on the rocks with an orange wedge.
Don’t miss our annual “Best of H Texas” list (page 40), where Código 1530 takes top honors as Best Tequila.
