Gary E. Kraus, MD, Neurosurgery, PA
Kraus Back and Neck Institute

Dr. Kraus is a Neurosurgeon and has been selected as an H Texas Top Doc for five consecutive years. World class treatment in a caring and compassionate environment is what patients expect and receive at the Kraus Back and Neck Institute. We asked Dr. Kraus “In your professional career, what are you most proud of?” He said “making a real difference in peoples’ lives, changing lives and saving lives, my patients trust me with the most valuable possession they have, their health.” During his 25 years of practice of Neurosurgery, including residency and fellowship, he listens very carefully to each one of his patients and tailors a treatment plan accordingly.

Dr. Kraus’ expertise with both minimally invasive as well as traditional surgical procedures of the spine keep him on the cutting edge of his field, with patients often returning home the same or next day. In addition to his vast operative experience (having performed over 3000 operations on the spine), Dr. Kraus prefers helping his patients relieve their pain with conservative approaches whenever possible. With the state of the art non-surgical techniques at the Kraus Back and Neck Institute, they often accomplish this very successfully, and get back to their lives and activities quickly. Dr. Kraus is also contributing to the growth of knowledge in the field, with several patents pending for minimally invasive surgical techniques of the spine. He strongly believes that being able to incorporate the latest advances in medicine significantly improves the outcome for patients.

When it comes to the brain, Dr. Kraus utilizes computer-guided navigation to guide him in the minimally invasive surgical removal of brain tumors. Dr. Kraus is also an expert on the Gamma Knife (having performed over 600 procedures) which is a non-invasive treatment for brain tumors, allowing patients to return home an hour after their treatment.

Dr. Kraus feels “many patients are in severe pain, they may have cancer, or have suffered injuries and are often confused and scared. I treat patients the way I would want to be treated.” We think that says it all.

Dr. Kraus is Director of Neurosciences and Gamma Knife at West Houston Medical Center. He is Chairman of Neurosurgery at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital and Director of Neurosurgery at Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. He is Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Kraus is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and has been listed in “Best Doctors in America,” featured in Newsweek and “Who’s Who in America.”

Publications include the textbook “Microsurgical Anatomy of the Brain: A Stereo Atlas” (published by Williams and Wilkins), as well as numerous peer-reviewed papers and chapters in neurosurgery journals and textbooks.
