FIGHT HEART DISEASE ONE STEP AT A TIME: JOIN THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION FOR THE 2011 HOUSTON HEART WALK

WHAT:
Join the American Heart Association on Saturday, November 5 with more than 25,000 Houstonians for the 2011 Houston Heart Walk, a non-competitive, five mile walk. Join families, friends, co-workers, heart disease and stroke survivors and walk. Walk for a family member who lost their battle. Walk for a survivor. Walk for yourself. Walk for your children as an example to live a healthier life. Walk to raise funds for the American Heart Association so they can continue to fight the No. 1 health threat, heart disease. Take a step toward a stronger, healthier life and show your support for the cause. The walk kicks off at 9 a.m. in Sam Houston Park Downtown.

Families will celebrate and enjoy festivities throughout the park in three interactive villages: Inspire Change (nutrition, information about making changes for health); Celebrate Success (Kid’s zone, Lifestyle Change Award announcement, team photos); and Create Hope (survivor area, free health screenings, heart health).The annual success of the Heart Walk is due in part to national and local sponsors. The Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by SUBWAY® restaurants, and locally by Reliant Energy and FMC Technologies.

(Opening ceremony starts 9 a.m. with walk kicking off at 9:30 a.m.)

WHY:
Heart disease and stroke — the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers — and all other cardiovascular diseases, claim more than 870,000 American lives a year.  The American Heart Association’s goal is $2 million for the 2011 Walk. Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded or contributed to many important innovations such as CPR, life-extending drugs (including clot-busters), pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart-lung machine and surgical techniques to repair heart defects.

HOW:

To participate in the annual event, walkers can registers online by visiting www.houstonheartwalk.org or by calling 713-610-5000. There is no registration fee, but donations are accepted. Walk as part of a company team or form your own team with family and friends.
