Technology can make great surgeons even better. Richard R.M. Francis, MD, a recognized leader in orthopedic spine surgery, is a prime example. Dr. Francis is the first surgeon in Houston to employ the Mazor Robotics Renaissance guidance system, new technology that minimizes the invasiveness of back surgery.

“We have always believed in staying at the forefront of technology in terms of caring for our patients. The Mazor Robotics Renaissance system is the safest and most accurate, minimally invasive technology available for spinal surgical procedures,” says Dr. Francis, CEO and founder of Spine Associates. “In the past, the challenge for surgeons was the lack of direct line of sight, requiring many intra-operative X-rays. With the Renaissance, we are able to see more during surgery. What this translates for our patients is less pain, smaller incisions, minimal intra-operative radiation, shorter hospitalizations and faster recovery time.”

Dr. Francis, named as one of Houston’s Top Docs for eight consecutive years, specializes in the care of all spine disorders and the correction of spine deformities and failed spines. In addition to his vast experience and knowledge, his compassion for his patients and their families has set him apart as a leader in the medical community. His empathy for his patients became even greater after having suffered from back pain himself. Because of his own back problems, Dr. Francis knows the importance of treating not just the problem, but each individual patient as well.

In order to maintain this type of patient care, Dr. Francis relies on his professionally trained staff to also go above and beyond in the treatment of patients. This level of patient service starts as soon as a patient calls to schedule an appointment or a referral is received from a colleague of Dr. Francis. Patients are provided an appointment within three days and it is not unheard of for Dr. Francis to see patients the same day. Spine Associates has built their practice around the patient, offering extended hours including on Saturdays. Dr. Francis sees each patient himself on every visit, addressing questions and educating the patient and their loved ones on the course of care. In addition, Spine Associates schedules all ancillary studies and services for their patients. This streamlines the patient’s care and recovery to get them back to normal.

Dr. Francis has practiced medicine for twenty four years. He trained as a postdoctoral Fellow in Spine Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is married to his best friend Juanitta and together they have four beautiful children—Chloe, Shannon, Zachary and Samantha.
