Having been selected as an H Texas Top Doc for four years now, it is evident that Dr. Kraus’ drive to perfect and innovate surgical techniques is as fresh as it was 17 years ago, when he first established his neurosurgery practice.  Dr. Kraus’ expertise with both minimally invasive surgery as well as open surgical procedures on the spine and brain has kept him on the cutting edge of his field.  His vast experience with conservative approaches such as epidural steroids injections and physical medicine, in addition to surgical interventions, helps him to have a complete understanding of pain, and allows him to provide his patients truly complete and comprehensive spine care under one roof.
Many of Dr. Kraus’ patients are able to receive same day care and return home after treatment, while others may require short hospital stays.  Treatment plans are tailored to an individual’s need, he states “we work really hard to accommodate each patient’s lifestyle, recovery goals and comfort level.  Different patients with back and leg pain may have different expectations and desires regarding their treatment.”  He says that some of his patients prefer a surgical solution while others want to avoid surgery and “try everything else possible.”  The advantage of the multidisciplinary approach offered by Dr. Kraus is that patients can seamlessly transition from a conservative to a surgical approach if needed.
Dr. Kraus not only incorporates new techniques and technologies in his practice, but is also contributing to the field with surgical instrument patents pending.  He believes that incorporating the latest advances in the field improves the outcomes of patients.
“Many patients are in pain,” he relates.  “They may have cancer, or have suffered injuries, and they are often scared. Patients with disorders of the spine and brain require their neurosurgeon to deliver the most advanced treatment, in a caring and
compassionate manner.”
Dr. Kraus is Director of Neurosciences and Gamma Knife at West Houston Medical Center.  He is Chairman of the Neurosurgery Section at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital.  He is Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  Dr. Kraus is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and has been listed in “Best Doctors in America,” and “Who’s Who in America.”

Publications include the textbook Mircosurgical Anatomy of the Brain: A Stereo Atlas (Published by Williams and Wilkins) and numerous peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.
